Losing weight is tough, especially when it seems like everything that’s out there is geared towards people trying to drop only a couple of pounds, or that aren’t worried about their future health. But you can lose more than 50 pounds without sacrificing your health or sanity! Read on…
Stay Away From Diet Soda
One of the first — and certainly most important — steps you should take on your weight loss journey is to not drink your calories. Now, you probably already know that things like regular soda or calorie-packed Starbucks drinks are bad for you, but did you know diet sodas are as well?
Unfortunately, it’s true. Why’s that? For starters, they slow your metabolism which means your body will burn less calories each day. This happens due to the fact that diet sodas, despite being zero calorie and sometimes zero carb, are highly processed foods.
That means your body does very little work digesting them, meaning you don’t get the benefit of turning on your body’s fat-burning engines that eating more natural foods provides you. But wait — there’s still more!
Drinking diet soda also turns on your “fat genes,” increases stomach fat, and triggers your sweet tooth. To learn more about those, and what you should be drinking instead, check out article on why diet sodas are bad for you.
Try Some Coconut Oil
Let’s move on to a positive (and very easy to follow) change you can make, which is adding coconut oil into your diet. Very popular among people who have successfully lost 50 pounds or more, coconut oil provides many benefits including boosting your metabolism and reducing abdominal fat.
Two studies proved these theories by having participants supplement their diets with just two tablespoons of coconut oil per day. The high amount of what are called medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil are processed differently by your body than other fats.
This leads to a thermogenic, or fat-burning, effect which boosts your metabolism by as much as 5% per day. That translates to roughly 120 calories per day, just by having a couple of tablespoons of the oil a day. That’s not so tough, huh?
These same fatty acids were also found to reduce study participants’ appetites, to the point that some were taking in as many as 256 fewer calories each day. Think of how many pounds of weight loss that will add up to in just a few months time!
Get Your Fluid Magic Weapons
Since you now know that soda isn’t an option, let’s talk about what you should be drinking. To begin with, try having a glass of water (if not two) 30 minutes before each meal. This is proven to make the pounds fall off.
And we’re not talking just a pound or two. Researchers found that people who did this lost an average of 9.48 pounds over just 12 weeks — without making any other changes to their lifestyle. But let’s kick things up another notch…
…by also drinking green tea! Have some green tea two hours after eating and you’ll raise your resting metabolism by 4%, meaning you burn an additional 80 calories every single day. You’ll also boost your body’s ability to burn fat by 17%!
One quick note of advice, however: do not drink green tea on an empty stomach, as this causes an upset stomach for many people. You’ll also want to avoid it during meal times, as it will inhibit your body’s absorption of iron.
Be Lazy and Stay in Bed
Now here’s some weight loss advice we can all get behind, right!? How exactly, you’re wondering, will sleeping more help you to lose weight? Well, it’s simple actually. Sleep deprivation is linked to higher stress levels as well as slowed metabolisms.
When you’re stressed, your body produces more of a hormone known as cortisol. And guess what awful side effect it has? Increasing appetite! Pair that with a slowed metabolism, and you’ll see why getting plenty of sleep is absolutely vital if you want to lose weight and keep it off.
Start Planning and Prepping
We’re all ultra-motivated when starting a new diet. But then reality hits, and instead of having a healthy sandwich or salad for lunch we hit the burger joint, promising ourselves it’s just today that we’re going to do this. And then it happens the next day, and the next… you know the drill.
So how do we avoid this happening? By planning and prepping your meals! Pick a time each week (Sunday night, for instance) where you’ll make healthy lunches and snacks for the week. Portion them out into containers so there’ll be no temptation to overeat.
How does this help? When we’re stressed, our willpower goes out the door. By having a healthy meal already to go, the easiest option will also be the healthiest one! If you need some ideas to get you started, check out our article on healthy snacks.
Eat With a Purpose
Nutrition researcher John Barban has long been known for his focus on the inherent differences between men and women when it comes to getting results from diet and exercise. He recently started emphasizing what he calls the “5 wonder veggies for women.”
Studies showed that when women added these common vegetables to their diet their metabolisms (and as a result, weight loss) increased significantly, regardless of the woman’s lifestyle or body shape. Learn the 5 veggies in this video (1:05 mark) that explains how it works.
Now, these don’t seem so hard to work into your lifestyle, do they? Don’t worry if you have a setback here and there — those happen to us all. Just make sure to immediately get back on the right track! Oh, and be sure to pin this so you can remind yourself later! 🙂
