Trying to burn away fat but you’ve hit a plateau? With just some small, simple changes to what you eat, your food will finally taste great and work right alongside you to help your reach your goals!
Below, you’ll find a list of foods that burn fat. Some you may already be eating, and just haven’t realized just valuable they are to your diet. Others, you’ve probably been avoiding because like most of us you assume they’re bad for weight loss.
Read on, and find out what foods will kick your fat loss into overdrive. At least a few you’ll probably be happy to see — and to add back into your diet!
Grapefruit: Let’s see… you’ll get loads of Vitamin C, which helps your body burn fat. You’ll get 15 grams of pectin, which helps curb your appetite. An average grapefruit is only about 75 calories (or less). Oh, and grapefruits contain almost zero fat (0.1g per serving) and help reduce the risk of heart disease.
A recent study of 91 obese research participants at the Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center at Scripps Clinic in San Diego found that those who ate half a grapefruit three times per day lost an average of 3.5 pounds over 12 weeks. Those who substituted grapefruit juice for the real thing achieved near identical results (3.3lbs).
If you opt for juice, just make sure to choose one that’s 100% grapefruit juice. Blended beverages often come loaded with unwanted calories and ingredients that could blow your diet. Don’t let that hard work go to waste!

Green Tea: What’s not to like? Green tea helps to protect against diseases and contains an important antioxidant known as catechin that has been shown to reduce body fat and waist size (among many other positive benefits).
One study found that green tea raises resting metabolism by 4%, meaning you’ll burn about 80 calories more per day without changing any of your other daily habits.
Another found that it increases fat oxidation by 17% during exercise, meaning your workouts will melt away the fat even faster!
Greek Yogurt: Calcium has been shown to increase metabolism, so yogurt is an excellent option for a snack between meals or before bed. But you’ll want to go with Greek since it contains twice the amount of protein of regular yogurt.
Taking in more protein will help keep you feeling full and satisfied longer, which we all know is incredibly valuable when you’re watching your calories. That leads to one final, great reason: many popular Greek Yogurts are just 100 calories per serving!
Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potatoes don’t just taste great, they’re also a terrific part of any diet because they come loaded with important vitamins and antioxidants. But since you’re reading this article, you’ll be most interested to know that they contain a hormone known as adiponectin which helps to regulate your blood sugar and also has a positive effect on your metabolism.
Dark Chocolate: Yep, you read that right! You can indulge your sweet tooth and enjoy a small bit of candy without feeling guilty.
For starters, dark chocolate contains caffeine to keep you moving. More importantly, it’s loaded with catechins, the same antioxidant found in green tea that has been shown to decrease body fat and waist size!
Obviously, it’s important that you not overindulge here as there are 155 calories per ounce of dark chocolate. Try breaking off a small piece that works with your daily caloric intake, then putting the rest away and heading to the couch (or wherever) to enjoy.
This way, you’ll avoid the temptation of “just a little bit more” that’s so easy to give into when the candy’s sitting right there next to you waiting to be eaten.
